Learn to Knit Series
This series is designed to meet students where they are and is customizable to your learning and commitment needs. Classes are two hours long and are held in two sessions in person. Learn at your own pace.
Class size is limited, and pre-registration is required. Students are welcome to shop 30 minutes prior to class start time and will receive a 10% discount on class supplies.
201: Let’s Knit some Mitts (fingerless)! Put your basic knitting skills to use and create a simple, cozy set of fingerless mitts.
Class will be held in-person at KnitWit on Danforth St. in Portland, Maine.
PRE-REQUISITES:
- 101
OR
- able to perform long-tail cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off
- basic knowledge of knitting abbreviations
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Pompom’s “K-N-I-T H-O-W, Simple Knits, Tools, and Tips” resource book
- 1 skein/ball of yarn (DK/light worsted, approx. 250 yds total)
- set of 4mm/US6 circular needles with a 16” cord
- darning needle
- crochet hook
- measuring tape or ruler
- snips or scissors
TECHNIQUES WE’LL LEARN:
- reading a pattern
- identify different thicknesses of yarn, wraps per inch (WPI)
- “getting gauge”- making sure your stitches per inch is good
- more knitting abbreviations
- cast on (jeny's surprisingly stretchy cast on)
- ribbing
- binding off (jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off rib)
- how to fix dropped stitches
- the mattress stitch to join two project sides
